Biography
Peter DeGraaf is known by many as “Doctor Checkbook.” For over 40 years Peter and his wife, Karen, have been providing biblically based counseling to thousands (generally one couple at a time). Peter was ordained in 1990 and continues to serve as President and Founder of Shepherd’s Staff Ministries, Inc., a ministry dedicated to helping people get real life answers, to real life problems.
As a Minister of the Gospel, Peter and Karen, primarily teach about Money and Marriage. Over the years, they have helped 1000’s become financially free, many who say that their marriage was saved as a result of learning to apply the absolute biblical principles taught by this dynamic couple.
With a passion to release potential in those they serve, they will challenge your thinking, encourage you to dream your dreams, and help you avoid the pitfalls that ensnare so many.
Peter, is quick to admit, that it was Karen who home-schooled their four children, all of which are now married. In addition, Karen, loves to volunteer at the Mulvane Care & Share (a local, church supported food bank and thrift store) both on the “floor” and as one of the Board Members.
At the very beginning of their ministry, they decided to sell NO investment or insurance products and highly guarded their ability to provide uncompromising, confidential, Biblically-based counsel. Knowing that most of those they counseled could NOT afford to “pay” they decided to trust God and His people for their provision and NOT charge those they serve.
Due to complications associated with Parkinson’s Disease, and after serving as a State Representative to the Kansas House of Representatives for 9 years, Peter decided to resign his elected position, and also resigned as the Executive Director of SSM. John Ward has taken over much of Peter’s ministry responsibilities and serves as SSM’s Ministry Coordinator. Besides enjoying their 10 grandchildren Karen and Peter still enjoy counseling and teaching, but Peter can only do so on a very limited basis.
